FAQ
Business registration questions
Should I form an LLC or a corporation?
An LLC is usually simpler to run and offers flexible tax treatment, which suits many small businesses. A corporation has a more formal structure with shareholders, directors and officers, and can suit businesses planning to raise outside investment. If you're starting a charity, a nonprofit corporation is the usual first step toward 501(c)(3) status.
What does it cost?
You pay the state's filing fee plus our flat service fee: $149 for an LLC, corporation or foreign qualification, $199 for a nonprofit corporation or professional association, $249 for an LP or LLP, and $99 for a DBA. Annual report filing is $149 per state plus the state fee. State fees vary, so your exact total for the entity type and state you choose is shown before you pay.
Do I need a registered agent?
Yes. Every state requires a registered agent with a physical address in that state to accept legal documents on your behalf. We collect the signed registered agent consent as part of your filing.
Can you get an EIN for my business?
Yes. If you don't already have an Employer Identification Number from the IRS, we can obtain one for you.
What documents are involved?
For an LLC: articles of organization, an operating agreement, the registered agent consent, and a list of members or managers. For a corporation or nonprofit corporation: articles of incorporation, bylaws, the registered agent consent, and a list of initial officers and directors. Your client portal shows a checklist for your entity type.
